Welcome to 2013! Here’s the years first strip… and it’s super relevant because I just found out the show it’s based off – Swamp People on History Channel – ended last July. It’s an idea I had for awhile, and I still wanted to show it conceptually, so I figured the earlier the better. Might as well do it now than have it wither away in my sketchbook or do it while more time passes by and it becomes even more irrelevant.
Either way, one of my favorite parts of the show was commercial bumpers when there would be a squeaking sound with the claw of the alligator creeping up. The more I watched the show, the more I realized it was basically alligator murder show.
So here is the cast of Curls as if they were in Swamp People – Swamp Curls – the intros would just be their hands in claw formation reaching for the stars.
I love how Turtle Neck’s eyes turned red in this strip. Did you know most male turtles have red eyes? Female turtles have brown eyes. When I was designing Turtle Neck as a character, I selected to make his eyes green to be more friendly. This is the first episode he has gotten so angry that they are red. It’s a good visual device to show his range of emotions: color changing eyes!
I hope you all had a Happy Halloween yesterday. I gave out the Curls Halloween bookmarks to Trick-or-Treaters and they had a great reaction. Thanks to everyone who volunteered to give out the bookmarks. Now it’s the first day of November! Can you believe it? Only two months of 2012 are left.
We hope you will join us this Saturday, October 27 for Annapolis Comic-Con. Curls Studio will be exhibiting and The Carolyn & Joe Show podcast will be doing a LIVE show at noon. See you there!
