ALL are invited to&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">In Between the Panels: DC\u2019s Emergence on the Graphic Novel Scene<\/span><br \/>\nWednesday, November, 17, 2010, 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.<br \/>\nBusboys and Poets, 5th &#038; K Streets, Washington, DC<br \/>\nCost: FREE and open to the public! <\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wnba-books.org\/wash\/events.php#graphicnovel\">Women\u2019s National Book Association, DC Chapter<\/a> will sponsor a panel discussion on the DC graphic novel scene. The panel for the event, to be held at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.busboysandpoets.com\/about_5th.php\">Busboys &#038; Poets<\/a> in Mount Vernon, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., will include Carolyn Belefski, Molly Lawless, Matt Dembicki, and Mike Rhode. The event is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Carolyn Belefski<\/span> is the mastermind behind the web comic <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Curls<\/span>. She is also one of the creators of several other comic books: <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Kid Roxy<\/span>, <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Black Magic Tales<\/span>, and <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">The Legettes<\/span>, and an indefatigable (nightly) poster to her blog, <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Sketch Before Sleep<\/span>. Her work has appeared in <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">USA WEEKEND<\/span> Magazine, <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">The Commonwealth Times<\/span>, <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Virginia Living<\/span> Magazine, <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Magic Bullet<\/span>, <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">CROQ<\/span> Zine, and <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">The Pulse<\/span> on COMICON.com. Ms. Belefski is a nominee for the Kim Yale Award for Most Talented Newcomer for 2010.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Matt Dembicki<\/span> is a DC-based cartoonist whose work includes the award-winning nature parable <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Mr. Big<\/span>, <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">The Great White Shark Story<\/span>, <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Xoc<\/span>, and <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">The Brewmaster\u2019s Castle<\/span>, about legendary DC brewer Christian Heurich. His latest anthology, <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Trickster: Native American Tales: A Graphic Collection<\/span>, has received rave reviews from <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Booklist<\/span>, <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Publishers Weekly<\/span> and <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">School Library Journal<\/span> and has been nominated as one of the Young Adult Library Services Association\u2019s 2011 Great Graphic Novels for Teens. In addition to his own work, Dembicki also hosts kids\u2019 workshops in the DC area and beyond on making comic books.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Molly Lawless<\/span>, a Boston native, moved to the DC area in 2005. She has self-published mini comics as well as a compilation, <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Infandum! Ad Infinitum<\/span>. She is currently working on a full-length graphic novel for McFarland Publishing titled <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Hit by Pitch<\/span>. She is an avid blogger and includes stories about her family in her daily posts.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Mike Rhode<\/span>, panel moderator, is co-author of the <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">comics research bibliography<\/span>, editor of Exhibition and Media Reviews for the <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">International Journal of Comic Art<\/span>, and a contributing writer for <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Hogan\u2019s Alley<\/span>. In 2008, he was named Best (Comics) Art Blogger by the <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Washington City Paper<\/span> for his Comics DC blog. Rhodes edited <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Harvey Pekar: Conversations<\/span>, a book of interviews with the late underground comic book writer and author of <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">American Splendor<\/span> published by the University Press of Mississippi. He has written for the <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Comics Journal<\/span> and was selected as an RFK Journalism Awards judge for the editorial cartoon division of Comics Journal in 2009 and 2010.
